parkPictou Recreation and Parks is responsible for the management of the Fisheries Training Pool, three playgrounds, the Jitney Trail and sports fields including supporting facilities. Pictou Recreation & Parks also coordinates recreational programs, such as swimming lessons, water safety, summer day camps, and youth activity programs. Throughout the year Pictou Recreation & Parks coordinates special interest programs such as photography, art and self-defence classes.

Department activities also include communications for the Town of Pictou, managing the website and social media, and coordinating events including Canada Day, Natal Day, Christmas Light-up, Volunteer Banquet, the Summer Musical Showcase, and occasional special events such as community clean-ups, Pride week and milestone anniversary type activities.

The Pictou Recreation and Parks Committee, comprised of community members and two Town Councillors, is the group designated by Town Council to directly oversee the activities of the department. The committee defines results areas for the department in accordance with the Town of Pictou vision and makes recommendations to Council on matters concerning recreation and culture in Pictou. Meetings are generally held on the last Thursday of the month in the CN Station at 6:30 pm and are open to the public.

The Pictou Recreation & Parks mission is to achieve acceptable results in the following results areas by providing advice and assistance, utilizing community assets and partnerships, and by providing direct programs, services and facilities.

For community groups, finding funding in order to enhance programs or subsidize the costs of participation to the users is sometimes a challenge. There are a variety of organizations that offer funding and financial support for recreation activities and sports programs.

The purpose of this cooperative partnership amongst four municipalities in Pictou County is to educate and motivate all citizens to increase their daily physical activity in an effort to create a happier, healthier and active community.
