🐺 BE COYOTE SMART

Coyotes are permanent residents throughout Nova Scotia, and seeing or hearing one from time to time is not unusual. Coyotes are normally shy and fearful of people; however, feeding coyotes, directly or indirectly, can cause them to lose that natural fear.

Residents can help keep coyotes wild and our community safe by taking a few simple precautions:

• Never intentionally feed coyotes or leave food outdoors.
• Keep garbage securely stored in tightly closing or locking containers.
• Manage compost carefully and avoid adding meat, fat, bones or seafood shells.
• Clean up spilled birdseed and consider bringing feeders indoors at night.
• Keep cats and small pets indoors, particularly after dark.
• Always walk dogs on a leash.

🌲 If you encounter a coyote:
BACK AWAY • ACT BIG • MAKE NOISE

Do not run if a coyote approaches, as this may cause it to chase you. Be aware of your surroundings when enjoying trails and outdoor spaces, and consider carrying a whistle, air horn or other noisemaker.
